I’ll never forget the time I narrowly escaped a potentially dangerous situation with a group of crooks while traveling abroad. It was a solo trip to a bustling city, full of vibrant markets and crowded streets. I was enjoying the atmosphere, taking in the sights and sounds when I became distracted by a street performer’s lively act. Without realizing it, I wandered into a quieter alley, away from the main thoroughfare.
Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I turned around, three men were standing close, too close for comfort. They were wearing dark clothing and had unwelcoming expressions. One of them started asking me questions—something about directions and how I looked lost. I instinctively felt something was off. I wasn’t lost, and the way they surrounded me made my instincts scream to be cautious.

I tried to stay calm, backing away slightly while keeping my hands visible, but one of the men reached for my bag. I immediately realized their intentions—they were after my wallet, maybe even worse. My heart raced as I swiftly shifted my weight and broke into a fast walk, hoping to make it back to the busy street. They followed me for a few steps, but I managed to slip into the crowd, blending in just long enough for them to lose sight of me.
Once I was safely back in a public area, I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. I’d gotten away unscathed, but the encounter was a harsh reminder to stay aware and trust my instincts, especially when traveling in unfamiliar areas.
It was a close call, and I’ve never been more grateful for a moment of clear-headedness.
