I’ve always been someone who believes that any place can be a great travel destination with the right company. However, there’s one place I visited that completely shattered that idea and taught me that not all destinations are worth exploring, even with the best of friends.
A few years ago, a group of friends and I decided to take a spontaneous trip to a remote, lesser-known destination deep in the mountains. The pictures we’d seen online made it look like a hidden paradise—clear blue lakes, towering trees, and pristine nature. However, upon arrival, we quickly realized that the reality was far from what we’d imagined.
The area was incredibly isolated, which was part of its charm—but also its danger. The roads leading there were poorly maintained and treacherous, even for a 4×4 vehicle. We’d gotten stuck twice before we finally reached our destination. Once there, we found the “cabin” we’d rented had no running water, electricity, or cell service. The beauty of nature quickly gave way to the harsh realities of its isolation. As the days went on, we began to feel increasingly cut off from the world, with no way to contact anyone if anything went wrong.

On the second night, we went for a short hike, but something felt off. We heard strange noises coming from the surrounding woods and saw shadows moving in the distance, which made us uneasy. Despite our best efforts to brush it off, the feeling of isolation and the eerie silence of the forest created a sense of dread that none of us could ignore. We even considered leaving early, but the thought of trying to drive back on those roads in the dark was terrifying.
The experience was a stark reminder that sometimes, the thrill of “off-the-beaten-path” travel isn’t worth the risk. While the scenery was beautiful, the safety concerns and discomforts outweighed the adventure. It taught me to be more cautious in my travel choices and to avoid places that, no matter how stunning, could put us in danger.
Since then, I’ve learned to choose destinations with care, prioritizing not only beauty but also safety, accessibility, and practicality.
